Historic Note

103, Station Road was built in the 1870s as a shop with living space above.

In the 1880s the shop was run by Elizabeth Goddard as milliners.

At the turn of the century, the shop had become a general dealer and bakery run by William and Charlotte Greaves.

It remained a bakery through the 1920s – run by Ada Dempsey – and 1950s - run by Mary Sykes. By the 1960s it belonged to Stan Raddon, a plumber. In the early 1990s, the previous owners converted and removed the shopfront.

Vendor Note 1

The current owners purchased the property in 1997.

They renovated the basement into a kitchen, store room and a large room for registered childminding, a successful business for over 20 years – 90 children! – until retirement in 2022.

They also renovated the ground floor to provide a shower room and office space from which a consulting business was run for over 20 years until retirement in 2018.

Vendor Note 2

In 2012 the current owners renovated the then garage into the space known as ‘The Craft Barn’. This has been run successfully as a business for ten years providing children’s arts and crafts sessions, parent and baby groups, and evening and weekend creative workshops (e.g., jewellery, textiles, art). The Craft Barn has also been a venue for the popular annual Hadfield Open Art Show and has regularly provided an exhibition space for independent artists. The calm atmosphere of the Craft Barn has been commented on by many people who attend events, and is fundamental to promoting creativity and well-being for young and old alike.
